Chromosome 5q deletion and epigenetic suppression of the gene encoding [alpha]-catenin (CTNNA1) in myeloid cell transformation
Article Abstract:
An analysis of gene expression on RNA from primitive leukemia-initiating cells that harbor 5q deletions is highlighted to examine 12 genes within the commonly deleted region that are expressed by normal hematopoietic stem cells. It is shown that the gene encoding [alpha]-catenin is expressed at a much lower level in leukemia-initiating stem cells from individuals with acute myeloid leukemia or myelodysplastic syndrome with a 5q deletion.

Caspase 8 is deleted or silenced preferentially in childhood neuroblastomas with amplification of MYCN
Article Abstract:
The caspase 8 gene is completely inactivated in many children with neuroblastomas containing an amplified MYCN oncogene. In a study of 42 children with neuroblastoma, 63% of those with MYCN amplification had completely methylated CASP8 alleles, compared to 3.7% of those without MYCN amplification.

STAT5A is epigenetically silenced by the tyrosine kinase NPM1-ALK and acts as a tumor suppressor by reciprocally inhibiting NPM1-ALK expression
Article Abstract:
The epigenetic silencing of the STAT5A gene by the NPM1-ALK tyrosine kinase is analyzed. The analysis shows that the STAT5A protein can also effectively suppress tumors by inhibiting the NPM1-ALK expression.
